The Mutually Beneficial Relationship
between our Community and our School

It is evident that the vast majority of Thetis Island residents not only supports our school, but is committed to its future and the future of our children. At the public community/education meeting with members of our School Board, many residents spoke the praises of our school, our teacher, and the value that the school brings to our community. The vast majority of those who gave statements at this meeting were not parents of students but represented a cross section of the population of ThetisIsland.

I would like to bring to your attention a letter dated February 14th from Islands Trust, which relates to the importance of schools and community on the Gulf islands.  This letter was submitted to the District 79 Board of School Trustees on February 18th at the school/community meeting. (Letter to be presented to AGM on March 20, 2008.)

It is evident that our school's existence is deeply rooted in our community. The future of our school in this community is also dependent on the population of children and their families living on our Island. This equates with the commitment, support and encouragement our community gives to present families, new families and those that may arrive here to make Thetis Island their future home.

It is evident that the new families who have chosen to move here recently have made tremendous contributions that have brought positive energy that helps to enhance the sustainability of Thetis Island.

On behalf of our students, parents, school and school staff; we would like to respectfully submit the following Motion to TIRRA AGM for your approval:

"That theThetis Island Resident's and Rate Payer's Association (TIRRA)  recognize and support the belief that Thetis Island School is acknowledged as an important and integral part of our community. Further, that there is a very strong connection and link between the school, our children, families and community, and that strong bond and connection should be supported in principal and submitted in writing to the; APC (Advisory Planning Commission) and OCP (Official Community Plan) for  inclusion in the Thetis Island Official Community Plan".

(This motion was passed at the TIRRA Annual General Meeting, March 20th, 2008)
