THETIS ISLAND COMMUNITY FUND
CRITERIA AND PROCESS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS
Preamble
All requests will be handled with confidentiality.
Criteria are designed to set out the conditions or terms upon which funds are disbursed.
Process outlines how to make a request for funds.
Definitions
- Student is defined as a person formally engaged in learning, especially enrolled in a school, college, technical institute, trade school or university or engaged in an apprenticeship program.
THE PURPOSES OF THE THETIS ISLAND COMMUNITY FUND
(a) To provide funds for medical treatment and care for Thetis Island residents in financial need
Criteria
- A medical condition requiring treatment and or care;
- Expenses, including costs and fees, in whole or in part not covered by BC Medical or other insurance coverage;
- There is no reasonable expectation these expenses can be met from other sources.
Process
- Any person, on behalf of another or on his or her own behalf can make a request in person by telephone or in writing. This request can be made to any member of the Board and will be considered by the Directors on an individual basis.
(b) To advance education and relieve poverty by providing funds for educational field trips, the purchase of educational equipment, fees and tuition for courses, and other educational supplies for students in financial need;
This purpose is divided into four parts. A common element of each is that eligibility is dependant on being a Thetis Island resident.
1. Criteria … for providing funds for educational field trips, the purchase of educational equipment.
- An educational component;
- Financial need;
- No other funds reasonably available.
Process
- A request shall be made by the teacher, parent/guardian of a student, or a student.
2. Criteria … for providing funds for fees and tuition for courses.
- An educational component;
- Financial need;
- No other funds are reasonably available;
- A demonstrated interest in the content of the courses to be pursued;
- A demonstrated interest and commitment to the Thetis Island Community.
Process
- A written request can be made by the individual or by a family member on behalf of a child.
3. Criteria … to access funds for other education supplies
Elementary School Students
- An educational component;
- Financial need;
- No other funds reasonably available.
Secondary, Post Secondary Students, including Adult Students
- An educational component;
- Financial need;
- No other funds reasonably available;
- A demonstrated interest in the content of the course of study to be pursued;
- A explanation of how the assistance in funding for educational supplies relates to the course of study proposed;
- A demonstrated interest and commitment to the Thetis Island Community.
Process
- Students and parent/guardian of elementary school students must apply in writing, outlining how they meet the criteria for a grant of funds. Each application must be accompanied by a proposed budget, outlining the costs of the program.
(c) To advance education by providing scholarships and bursaries to students on Thetis Island for post secondary education;
Criteria
- Resident of Thetis Island;
- Demonstrated an active interest and commitment to the Thetis Island Community;
- Accepted at an adult institution, i.e., University, College or Trade School;
- Registered in a program offered by the institution;
- A written outline of the students education/training plan.
Process
- Students must apply in writing, outlining how they meet the criteria for a grant of funds. Each application must be accompanied by a proposed budget, outlining the costs of the program.
(d) To provide support services for the relief of senior residents of Thetis Island
Disbursement of funds could be to an individual senior or to the benefit of a group of seniors.
This is somewhat uncharted territory and we are looking to the Community for input. We would like to be able to assist seniors requiring support to continue to reside on Thetis Island and allow them to participate in the activities of the Island. Some possibilities might include, transportation, home care support, equipment and residential services.
(e) To gift funds to other registered charities or organizations that are otherwise qualified donees as defined in subsection 149.1(1) of the Income Tax Act (Canada).
Criteria
- The applicant must be a charity or qualified organization with activities on Thetis Island;
- The funds must be used for the charitable purposes of the qualified organization;
- The request is supported by the residents of the Thetis Island community.
Process
- An application for funds must be made in writing addressing the criteria set out. In addition the application should be accompanied by a brief explanation of the project to be funded together with an estimate or estimates of the costs to be incurred;
